La flautista Barbara Ann "Bobbi" Humphrey nació en Marlin Texas, en 1950. Tocó, entre otros, con Lee Morgan y con su amigo Stevie Wonder.
Luego de que Dizzy Gillespie la descubriera en un concurso de talentos, Bobbi se mudó a New York. A partir de 1971 comenzó a editar discos nada menos que a través de Blue Note. Grabado en 1973, "Blacks and blues" fue el tercer lp para el prestigioso sello.
